The world renowned Rio de Janeiro Carnival features a reputation of over two hundred years old. Rooted within both pagan and religious celebrations, the carnival is observed over the four days prior to the beginning of Lent. The Rio Carnival always has been the principal attraction amidst tourists. Regardless of all the carnivals that occur in Brazil, it's Rio de Janeiro that is referred to as the Carnival capital of the globe.

The festivity begins on a Saturday, forty days before Easter finishes on a Fat Tuesday, after which Easter starts off on Wednesday. The event is celebrated in the month of February, occasionally March, which often is the hottest time in Rio.

The Rio Carnival, as we know it nowadays, was born in an attempt to make the gatherings more civilized in the manner of European carnivals. Face masks and rich costumes were introduced by the upper classes who paraded them around the city avenues inside their open carriages. The carnival also resembles celebrations with beverages, food and music that carry on during the day and into the early hours of the morning.
